General Petition Information
Abstract: Auguste Donato reports that, ten years after selling a certain tract of land to Françoise Brunet, a free woman of color and the wife of Jean Gallot, he has not been fully paid. At the time of the sale, Mrs. Gallot transferred a promissory note for $1,000 to Donato. Half of the note was paid by Louise Frilot, widow of the late Ludger Lemelle. Françoise Brunet Gallot promised to pay the remaining balance of $500 three years after the day of sale. To ensure payment, Donato reserved upon said land and improvements a special mortgage and the vendor’s privilege. Although long since due, Mrs. Gallot has neglected to pay any part of the debt. Donato prays for an order of seizure and sale directing the sheriff to sell the land for cash and pay the amount owed to him, with interest. A related petition reveals that Ludger Lemelle was a free man of color.
